Arreton St.George's CE (Church of England) Primary School is a village day school in Arreton, midway between Sandown and Newport in the Isle of Wight. It caters for the 4 to 9 age group and is co-educational. Around 80 children attend and the adjoining nursery provides pre-school education and holiday clubs. The school consists of three classes: Class 1 contains Reception and Year 1 pupils, Class 2 contains both Years 1 and 2, and Class 3 contains Years 3 and 4. The main intake of new pupils is in September. All parents must apply for a place to the Local Education Authority, irrespective of where they live - admission packs are available from the school and contain all the necessary information. Applications must be returned to County Hall by the end of January in the year that the child will be starting school. Parents and children who are due to start school are most welcome to make a preliminary visit to meet staff and pupils. The school holds an annual open day and we also provide an opportunity for children to spend time in the reception class before they start school. In the summer of 2002, the school was awarded the Kite Mark. This award is given for 'Excellence in the Early years'. Marion East (the early years co-ordinator for the Island) came to the school to present the award and met the parents and children of Class 1. According to Ofsted (2008): "The outstanding achievement levels reflect the high quality of learning and teaching. Relationships are very strong and teachers know and meet the needs of their pupils very well. Pupils are very well motivated by some interesting and varied approaches in lessons. At Arreton every pupil is paired up with a buddy. This is something we value and encourage throughout the child's school life. Pupils also volunteer to take on the responsibility of being a Friendship Buddy - at playtimes they wear rainbow sashes and look out for children who are in need of a friend. There is a rainbow friendship seat in the playround where pupils may sit if they need someone to play with. There is also an Adult Buddy Initiative. Adults regularly come into school on a Wednesday afternoon to work with groups of buddies on gardening, sewing, painting, sculpting, mosaics, cookery, flower arranging, stained glass and furniture renovation. This is thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding for both adults and pupils, as well as enhancing the school and the curriculum. The school always welcomes new recruits to this initiative. |

"St George's Nursery is situated within the grounds of the school providing many varied and stimulating activities for the children in a light, spacious and safe environment" (Ofsted 2001). The nursery caters for children aged 2 years until school age. It is open between the hours of 8.25am and 3 pm, Monday to Friday. These hours can be extended, as the Nursery runs a very successful after school club as well as a fun club in school holidays. This caters for children up to the age of 11 years. The nursery was awarded a Kite Mark in 2001 and had an excellent Ofsted report. |

At Arreton there is a well established and successful Enterprise Club. Members run a daily tuckshop and plan many fundraising initiatives throughout the school year. They have purchased a bouncy castle which they hire out to families at the school. The money raised supports the resources needed for the Adult Buddy Initiative and the ongoing School Grounds Projects to improve and enhance the pupils' school environment. Since achieving the Healthy Schools award in 2002, the staff and pupils have continued to work towards improving their school environment. The pupils submit plans and designs working alongside staff and other members of the local community. They have already successfully completed a garden they named St.George's Garden as part of Phase One. Phase two includes plans for the fields and the garden which are well underway. There is also a rebuilding programme imminent that will improve the facilities and provide additional space. |

Alphabet of most looked-up words - Interesting list from dictionary.com, which is an American site (so beware some of the spellings) but still worth exploring. 1911 Encyclopaedia - The classic version of Britannica, and free (the current one isn't). Canon Papercraft - Excellent site with loads of material to print, all free. Includes conventional cut-out models and Origami. Suitable for all abilities - start with the finger puppets! Fiddlers Green - Another paper modelling site. Very comprehensive, but only a few free items. Still worth a look, though.
